Housing Justice
Displacement, neighborhood redevelopment, and critical placemaking are key determinants of health for Black communities. Forced displacement due to gentrification, urban renewal, and discriminatory housing policies fractures social networks, disrupts healthcare access, and increases exposure to environmental hazards. Our lab investigates how these structural forces impact health outcomes, from chronic disease to mental health distress, and how neighborhood redevelopment projects can either perpetuate harm or promote health equity. We critically examine policies that drive racialized displacement, the role of community engagement in development processes, and strategies for preserving Black spaces as sites of cultural, economic, and social stability. Through research and advocacy, we work toward housing justice solutions that prioritize Black residents' right to remain, thrive, and define their own communities.
